EPILEPSY WITH MYOCLONIC ABSENCES (EMA)
- Lennox-Gastaut syndrome - atypical absences may occur with rhythmic jerking or loss of tone, however is distinguished by the EEG showing slow (<2.5Hz) spike-wave
- Childhood absence epilepsy - myoclonic jerks can accompany typical absence seizures but are low amplitude and do not cause stepwise tonic abduction of the arms
- Myoclonic absence seizures can rarely occur with other etiologies but are not a predominant seizure type
