SELF-LIMITED (FAMILIAL) INFANTILE EPILEPSY (SeLIE)

• Self-limited (familial) neonatal epilepsy and self-limited familial neonatal-infantile epilepsy: the distinction is made on the age at seizure onset (including in all affected family members when familial)
• As acute provoked seizures are common, the individual (and affected family members if familial) should be screened to exclude acute causes e.g. hypoxia-ischemia, bleed, infection, stroke etc
• The individual (and affected family members if familial) should be screened to exclude a structural cause e.g. focal cortical dysplasia
• Familial focal epilepsy with variable foci is distinguished by a family history of individuals with focal seizures that continue past the infantile period
• Dravet syndrome: suspected if the individual has prolonged focal clonic (hemiclonic) seizures, rather than brief seizures
• Epilepsy of infancy with migrating focal seizures: suspected if the individual has emerging developmental impairments and focal seizures that migrate locations during the seizure on EEG.
